A visiting Sandhill Crane |
The Sandhill Crane is up to 4 feet tall. While not a regular resident here in North Carolina, we do get them passing through and at times they forget for a while that they are not supposed to be living here!
This bird spent the winter of 2004-2005 in Guiliford County, NC (at the Alamance County line). It found a friendly area of the county and settled down in a corn field. I visited it there a couple of times and it turned out to be a great photo model. Not at all afraid of humans and at times rather inquisitive.
According to Emily Tyler, who had kept everyone on the CarolinaBirds mailing list informed on the appearances of the crane, the last day the Guilford Sandhill Crane was seen was April 3, 2005. It was first spotted in the location on Osceola/Ossipee Rd. on February 10 but it had been seen on a nearby farm as early as the holidays.
